Curriculum Overview Curriculum Overview

The three-year curriculum at the Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency gives the resident a solid base in a hospital-oriented practice while allowing the individual to develop proficiency in outpatient management skills.

First Year Of Training
The majority of the internship year is spent caring for inpatients. Family and adult medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, emergency medicine, maternity care and surgery are hospital-based experiences. The Family Medicine Rotation allows the new intern to participate in the inpatient management of patients from the Residency. The Acute Care/Night Float rotation provides the intern with experience in managing patients at the time of initial presentation to the hospital. This rotation takes place during the night and redures the total number of calls for each intern and resident. It is mandatory for all residents. Throughout the first year, the intern spends two half-days per week in the Family Medicine Center.

Second Year Of Training
An average of three half-days per week is spent in the Family Medicine Center. Although some of the rotations are similar to the first year of training, the responsibilities of the resident are more as a supervisor and teacher. In addition to the required hospital-based rotations, most rotations emphasize the outpatient management of common office problems. One month is available for an elective.

Third Year Of Training
The majority of the third year is spent in an outpatient setting. This includes four to five half-days a week in the Family Medicine Center. Required rotations include coronary care, acute care, family service, practice management, orthopedics, dermatology, radiology, ENT, ophthalmology, laboratory and urology. The remaining months are elective, during which time other subspecialty rotations may be scheduled. Additional months of maternity care are available for those residents who want more obstetrical training.

Call Schedule

The call schedule varies depending on the year of training and the rotation. Generally, the internship year call will average every fifth night. Second year call will average every sixth night. In the third year, call will average every eighth night. Most calls in the second and third years are taken from home as well as some of the first year calls.
