Centra Lynchburg General Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Thomson Reuters.  For the first time in the study's history, Thomson Reuters has singled out 50 hospitals instead of the traditional practice of naming 100 winners.  This is the sixth time Centra has been rated as one of the nation’s top cardiovascular hospitals.  Only three other hospitals in Virginia received the award this year. Thomson Reuters examined the performance of 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients who received coronary bypass surgery and coronary interventions, such as angioplasty, as well as patients who received care for heart failure and heart attacks. “We’ve chosen a more elite group of winners this year. These hospitals have raised the bar significantly,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals program at Thomson Reuters. “They deliver higher survival rates, shorter hospital stays, fewer readmissions, and lower costs — which adds up to enormous value for the communities they serve. As a result, everyone benefits: patients, families, employers, insurers and the hospital itself.” The study shows that 96 percent of cardiovascular inpatients survive and approximately 93 percent remain complication-free, indicative of improved cardiovascular care…

Centra President and CEO George Dawson received the 2010 Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA) at its annual meeting in Hot Springs.  VHHA’s membership represents 114 different hospitals throughout Virginia.  Each year, only one CEO from these hospitals is chosen to receive this honor. This award is given to a current or past chief executive officer selected from VHHA members who has a record of performing outstanding, valuable, or unique services to the hospital community and has made exemplary contributions through leadership, management, education, research, or service. “I have been with Centra for 30 years, and the best part is getting to work alongside the 6,000 caring employees who take seriously our commitment to patient care,” said Dawson. “They are the reason Centra has earned a national reputation for safety and outstanding clinical excellence.  I am honored to work with them and accept this award on their behalf.” In 2009, Dawson also received the national Partnership for Action Grassroots Champion Award by the American Hospital Association for his leadership in organizing grassroots and community involvement in support of Centra’s mission to meet the healthcare needs in our region. Dawson is a Fellow in the American…

Tom Jividen has been named the first recipient of the Partnership Award given by the Lynchburg Neighborhood Development Foundation (LNDF), a nonprofit business that finances and develops housing for low income residents and finances community projects. Jividen is being recognized for his leadership as part of the Centra team that turned an unused building near downtown Lynchburg into a medical facility that houses the Johnson Health Center Pediatric and Obstetrics Clinic and the PACE program. Centra, LNDF, and the Johnson Health Center collaborated in the development of what is now called the Pyramid Health Center off Fifth Street in Lynchburg. "This center wouldn't be here if it weren't for Tom," said Executive Director of LNDF Laura Dupuy. "This is something that not only helps revitalize that neighborhood, it also helps individuals throughout the city get better access to primary health care." As part of the LNDF Board of Directors, Jividen also played a pivotal role in the conception and development of College Hill Homes and Central City Homes. This project transformed 24 dilapidated and abandoned buildings into 65 new apartments for area residents. To recognize Jividen's contributions, the LNDF has named and dedicated its garden at the Pyramid Health Center…

Consumer Reports reported on its web site that The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has once again awarded Centra with its highest rating of three stars for its open heart surgery program at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. Centra has received this award every year since its inception four years ago. The study results will be published in the October edition of Consumer Reports magazine. According to Consumer Reports, Centra is among the top performing open heart surgery centers in this study and is the only hospital in the state of Virginia to receive this three-star ranking all four years. Consumer Reports' web site states, "More than 90% of the approximately 1,100 US cardiac surgery programs participate in this registry." Those participating in this registry are hospitals that have chosen to make their data public with the goal of improving open heart surgery outcomes across the country. "It is an honor to receive this award four years in a row," said David Frantz, M.D., Centra cardiothoracic surgeon. "We have known for a long time that we are delivering world-class heart surgery, and it is great for our patients and region to have that verified by STS." The registry created by STS…
