Centra College of Nursing (ADN)

The deadline is May 1 for entrance in August 2012 — September 1 for entrance in January 2013. All required documents must be on file by the deadline.

Centra College of Nursing is committed to providing excellent care to individuals, families, and patients in the community through the development of professional nurses. Graduates will be prepared to engage in best practices, through critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and building community relationships.

The College of Nursing offers a 5-semester educational program which leads to an Associate Degree in Nursing. In addition to attending classes at the Centra College of Nursing, students are enrolled at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC).

Application Process

  1. Applications for admission must be completed by the deadline as posted on the Centra College of Nursing website. Applicants will be notified of admission decision in writing.
  2. Three references from individuals, other than family members, must accompany the application. References should be from those who can speak to the applicant’s work ethic, community service and/or academic performance.
  3. Submit high school transcripts indicating that the applicant has or will complete a high school course of study or has a passing GED official score report. Algebra I and Biology must have been completed with a minimum grade of ‘C’. If Algebra I and Biology have not been completed in high school a college course in Algebra I and Biology may be accepted.
  4. Applicants must be accepted to attend Central Virginia Community College; COMPAS/ASSET tests must be completed as required by the College and applicants’ scores indicate that they may enroll in ENG 111. Developmental courses, if indicated, must be completed prior to admission.
  5. Prerequisite courses (Biology 141, Biology 142, Math 120, Psychology 230) must be completed with a minimum grade of ‘C’. Applicants may be accepted, conditionally, prior to completion of prerequisite courses provided they will be completed before the entrance date. An American Heart Association CPR card (Healthcare Provider) is required for admission and must remain valid throughout the program.
  6. Submit official transcripts from any college attended. Transfer courses listed on another college’s transcript are not acceptable in lieu of a transcript from the actual college where credit was received. Science courses over 5 years old must be repeated.
  7. Medical examinations, background checks and random drug screens are required prior to admission.

Any physical, mental or emotional conditions requiring attention must be corrected prior to admission. Information on required immunizations may be obtained from the Student Health Nurse.

The individual’s health must permit him/her to meet the physical demands and working conditions required for employment as a nurse.

Criminal findings on the background checks, including failure to disclose information, may prohibit enrollment into the college.

Drug screens are completed by a vendor selected by the Centra College of Nursing. Any non-negative results, including refusal to be tested, may prohibit enrollment into the college.
