VBH Medical Career Camp

What is Medical Careers Camp?

Centra’s summer Medical Careers Camp at Virginia Baptist Hospital provides a week of mentored experience for 24 middle school students (rising seventh and eighth graders) interested in exploring the exciting world of Healthcare Careers. Students have an opportunity to explore the various facets of Healthcare and the connection with math and science skills and knowledge. Over the course of a week they will do hands on activities developed by various departments both from Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital. They may include:

  • Cardiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Infection Control
  • IV Therapy
  • Marketing
  • Medical Laboratory and Pathology
  • Nursing Skills
  • Nutrition Services
  • Obstetrics
  • Orthopaedics
  • Personal Health and Safety
  • Pharmacy and Math
  • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Radiology / X-ray
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Surgical Services

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must be a rising 7th or 8th grader for the upcoming fall 2012 school year.
  • Must have a true interest in a career in healthcare.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from facilities each day for the duration of the camp.
  • Must complete the application found at this website by Monday, April 2, 2012 (5:00 p.m.), and include one essay as explained on the application.
  • Must have one academic reference (form found on the application).
  • Must have signed parental permission to attend the camp and have a TB skin test, found on the application.

2012 Program Specifics:


  • Dates: 

    Orientation is July 27, 2012, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
    Camp is July 30 – August 3, 2012

  • Time: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Students cannot be dropped off earlier than 8:00am.)
  • Cost: Free
  • Lunch will be provided each day.
  • Limited to 24 participants.
  • Dress Code: We ask that students wear the Medical Career Camp T-Shirt (provided at orientation); a pair of clean, presentable, fitted or belted, khaki pants or capris; and a clean pair of comfortable shoes (No sandals or open toed shoes, for safety reasons). No perfume or cologne for patient allergy reasons.

2012 Application Instructions

All applications and recommendations must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., April 2, 2012.

  1. Download, print and complete the application. Fill out page one completely and have a parent or guardian complete and sign the parental permission to attend the camp, found on page 1, and the TB skin test permission form found on page 2 of the application.
  2. Please answer one of the essay questions found on page 3 of the application. Please remember that the quality of your answers is important as well as neatness, grammar and spelling.
  3. Turn in 1 academic recommendation (page 4) with your application. You may do this one of three ways:
    • Email your counselor or teacher the link to the application.
    • Download the application and email it to them as an attachment.
    • Print the recommendation sheet off and have them complete it by hand.

Timeline:

All applications and recommendations must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., April 2, 2012.

Notification of camp participants will be the week of May 2, 2012. Acceptance letters with required paper work will be mailed that week. There will be a camp waiting list in case of cancellation by an accepted participant.
