Volunteer at Centra
Give back to your community through service to others.
Traditional volunteer roles are available at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital and Guggenheimer Health & Rehabilitation Center. Opportunities specific to each facility are described below. As we reach forward in serving our community, volunteers now assist in a variety of ways at Bridges Adolescent Treatment Center, Rivermont Schools and other areas throughout Centra.

Centra Lynchburg General Volunteers
In the past 50 years, Centra Lynchburg General Hospital boasts an auxiliary of 434 active, dedicated volunteers and 104 teen volunteers. Last year they gave in excess of 65,925 hours of service. Our volunteers serve in many areas of Centra and work long and hard to raise and donate funds for state-of-the-art equipment, neighborhood clinics and the construction of guest rooms for families of out-of-town or critically ill patients.
Service Opportunities
The Auxiliary/Volunteer Services Department currently offers service opportunities in the following areas:
- Cardiac Rehabilitation and Treatment Center
- Stroobants Cardiovascular Pavilion
- Nursing units, including surgical, diabetic, pulmonary and progressive cardiac
- Gift Shops
- Information Desks
- Communications & Marketing
- Shuttle van transport
- Escort and discharge of patients
- Critical care, surgical waiting and Emergency Department waiting areas
- Delivery of mail and flowers
- Office and medical library assistants
- Pharmacy
- Radiology
- Clinical and Plant Engineering, including wheelchair maintenance and repair
- TLC Volunteer Nurses
- Errand service
- Customer service representatives
Unique services at Lynchburg General include assisting in the Emergency Department treatment area; driving the shuttle van to provide rides to patients, visitors and staff to and from parking lots; sewing teddy bears and making handmade toys for more than 6,000 children annually; and providing volunteer assistance for cardiac rehab in the Healthy Living Center at the Jamerson Family YMCA. Area teenagers (ages 14 to 18) who want to gain experience in health care can volunteer one afternoon, evening or weekend day per week (for at least one year) in various areas throughout the hospital.

Centra Virginia Baptist Volunteers
More than 380 active, dedicated volunteers have been serving the patients, visitors and staff at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital for more than 50 years and dedicated more than 64,000 hours of their time in 2005. In addition to the many hours of service, the auxiliary has raised and contributed funds toward such projects as the Child Care Center, Bridges Treatment Center dining room and van and the hospital parking decks.

Area youth ages 14 to 18 can participate in our 15-day summer volunteer program, or commit to volunteering twice a month during the school year, to gain valuable experiences in a health care setting.

The Auxiliary/Guild at Guggenheimer Health & Rehabilitation Center
The Auxiliary/Guild at Guggenheimer Health & Rehabilitation Center was started in 1966 by Ella Williams Fauber. This year the Guild has 72 active volunteers. In addition to their many hours of dedicated service, volunteers at Guggenheimer have raised and contributed funds that have helped to purchase large screen televisions for each floor and radios for many of the residents in need. They also helped purchase a sound system for the chapel, and they raised the money to buy a piano for the activities center.

Criteria for becoming a Centra volunteer:
- Sign and follow a code of confidentiality
- Become familiar with and follow hospital policies and procedures
- Commit to a specified schedule of service
- Attend an orientation program
- Purchase and wear the approved volunteer uniform while on duty
- Have TB skin testing as required and furnished by the hospital
