Centra Health Foundation Awards Grants
LYNCHBURG … The Centra Health Foundation has awarded 11 new grants for more than $319,000 through its Centra Community Health Initiative Fund to support community health-related projects and programs.
The Centra Community Health Initiative Fund was established in 1997 by Centra Health as a way to reinvest in the community and partner with other organizations on health-related projects. The grants are funded by Centra Health and administered by the Centra Health Foundation.
Since 1997, Centra Health has funded projects ranging from health education for children to handicap transportation for the elderly to prescription drugs for the working poor.
The latest Centra Community Health Initiative Fund grants include:
$40,000 to Central Virginia Community College to purchase equipment to be used in the Central Virginia Emergency Medical Training Program
$25,000 to Pharmacy Access Coalition of Central Virginia to establish a "mobile unit" for the Community Prescription Program for Campbell County and provide transitional support of the ongoing work of the coalition, including partial funding for the coordinator position and associated expenses
$15,000 to The Arc of Central Virginia to fund a nursing position for one year
$25,000 to the Jubilee Family Development Center to cover costs associated with the health education component of the Building Young Men and Women for Central Virginia Mentoring Services Program
$24,680 to Blue Ridge Emergency Medical Services for the HeartSave Project. Funds will be used to purchase nine AED's (Automatic External Defibrillators) for area rescue, fire and law enforcement agencies
$85,000 to Infectious Diseases Center of Central Virginia. Funds will be used to pay the salary of a registered nurse clinical coordinator, case manager and grants administrator.
$19,500 to Miriam's House to provide support for Miriam's House Child Care Initiative for a one-time grant to provide start-up funds for child care for homeless mothers
$15,000 to Virginia Coalition for Children's Health to support the Sign-Up Now program. The money will go toward a statewide initiative designed to support local efforts to enroll children in Medicaid and Famis insurance programs
$30,000 to Alliance for Children and Families' Stars For Success program. This six-week computer life skills course, held at the Johnson Health Center, is designed to enhance the self-sufficiency of pregnant and parenting teens
$45,522 to the Lynchburg Fire and EMS Program for the purchase of 12 Lead ECG (electrocardiogram) defibrillators
$10,000 to Blue Ridge Medical Center's Nelson County Wellness Passport. Funds will cover partial support of nurse practitioners, nursing assistants and medical supplies needed to carry out wellness checks
