Stroobants Heart Center of VA donates AED to D-Day Memorial

LYNCHBURG … Centra Health's Stroobants Heart Center of Virginia donated an Automatic External Defibrillator to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation in Bedford recently. The AED was presented to the D-Day officials by Lynchburg cardiologist Michael Valentine, M.D. Defibrillators are used to treat irregular heart rhythms-ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation-which are the most common causes of sudden death in Virginia and the nation. AEDs are used to deliver a shock to the heart to restore the organ's normal rhythm.

Defibrillators are usually found only in hospitals and on advanced support ambulances. With the development of new models and expansion of training, it is possible for these lifesaving devices to go into the field to be operated by properly trained business people, rescue squads, law enforcement agencies and general public first responders. Stroobants Heart Center of Virginia will provide training.
