Stacey Hinderliter, M.D., former director of pediatrics for the Central Virginia Health District, has joined Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency as a full-time faculty member.

Dr. Hinderliter, who has worked with the health department in Lynchburg, for the past 10 years, also will serve as Centra Health’s pediatric hospitalist for children who do not have a local physician. She will accept private patients at the residency office.

“Dr. Hinderliter will strengthen our residency program and raise the quality of care that we provide,” said Charles E. Driscoll, M.D., director of Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency. “She has taught ambulatory pediatrics to our residents at the health department, and students rate her as one of the top instructors in our program.”

As an adjunct to teaching and medical care, Dr. Hinderliter began a Reach Out and Read (ROR) program at the Central Virginia Health District. One of 2,500 ROR programs nationwide that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care, satellite ROR programs are offered at health departments in Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell counties.

“I look forward to teaching residents how to care for pediatric inpatients,” Dr. Hinderliter said. “Their experience will be good for the community, and will result in better care for hospitalized children.”

Dr. Hinderliter earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, served her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and was awarded a fellowship in neonatology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She is board certified in pediatrics. Prior to joining the Lynchburg health department in pediatrics, Dr. Hinderliter worked as a neonatologist in Pittsburgh.

Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency has provided community-based family medicine education since 1975. The program is affiliated with Centra Health and the University of Virginia.
