Rehabilitation Services

Centra rehabilitation offers inpatient and outpatient programs serving patients affected by disabling illnesses and injuries including stroke, heart disease, head injuries, amputation and arthritis. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and social workers provides medical and rehabilitative services for treating, educating and supporting the patient and their family. With Centra rehabilitation, your life is our mission.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities. Our therapists work closely with a patient's physicians and nurses to coordinate personalized treatment programs, working with the patient on every aspect of mobility, from climbing stairs to exercising and walking with crutches or a walker.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists help the patient develop, recover and/or maintain daily living and work skills including basic everyday tasks from bathing and dressing to routine household chores. They work with individuals who suffer from mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabling conditions with the goal of helping clients have independent, productive and satisfying lives.

Speech Therapy

Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat disorders related to speech, language, cognitive communication, voice, fluency and swallowing (specializing in diagnosing using modified barium swallow studies). Evaluation and treatment services are available for conditions arising from stroke, traumatic brain injury, deterioration, developmental delays, cancer (brain, oral and laryngeal), chronic respiratory conditions (relating to decreased coordination of breathing with swallowing such as COPD) and neuromuscular disorders (multiple sclerosis, ALS and Parkinson's disease).

Health and Rehabilitation Centers (Skilled Care)

Centra health and rehabilitation centers provide compassionate, patient-centered care care for patients who need skilled medical management with the benefit of 1-2 hours of physical, occupational, or speech therapy per day.  Our experienced physical, occupational and speech therapists are specially trained in providing care for both short and extended rehabilitation services.  The goal is to restore health and independence.

Centra Rehabilitation Management Services

Rehabilitation Management Services (RMS),  is a coordinated, physician-directed consultation program.  This unique program is only available at Centra's health and rehabilitation centers:

  • Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lynchburg
  • Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center in Amherst
  • The Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lynchburg (near Forest, VA)
The Summit

All three Centra health and rehabilitation centers offer RMS for patients with short-term orthopaedic needs.  Orthopaedic RMS includes weekly visits by James Dunstan, MD and certified orthopaedic nurse, Karen Creger, RN, BSN, ONC.  Patients receive close attention from this physician/RN team and care is coordinated with the patient's surgeon.  Having the reassurance that new developments and changes in health status are carefully monitored and promptly addressed is just one of the many ways our patients benefit from RMS.  This special attention by the RMS team is in addition to the care provided by the on-site nursing staff and facility physician.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Services

Most patients return to their usual activities within a few months after a heart attack or heart surgery. The purpose of cardiac rehabilitation is to monitor and improve the recovery process, increase fitness and reduce the risk of future heart problems.

These goals can be accomplished with the help of physicians, nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians, social workers and psychologists. Cardiac rehabilitation provides a safe way to exercise. Our program is medically supervised and monitored. For heart patients, exercise lessens the risk and severity of another cardiac event.

Cardiac rehabilitation teaches patients about their disease. Programs and individual counseling are available to help patients stop smoking, lose weight, lower high blood pressure, lower cholesterol and reduce emotional stress.

The Healthy Living Center at the Jamerson YMCA provides a maintenance exercise program for cardiac patients. These programs are also available at the Downtown facility, Altavista, Bedford, Farmville and Moneta YMCAs.  For additional information, please contact the Centra Stroobants Heart Center at 434.200.7062.

Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program designed to help people with lung disease function to their highest capability and to slow down the progression of their disease. The main focus of the program is patient education and monitored exercise conditioning. The pulmonary rehab team is comprised of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, physical therapists, and social services.

If you would like to participate in our pulmonary rehabilitation program, please call 434.200.3430 for more information or talk to your physician. Your doctor's referral is required in order for you to participate.

Pacemaker Clinic

The pacemaker clinic checks pacemaker operation over the telephone. For more information, contact the Centra Stroobants Heart Center at 434.200.7062.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

Acute Rehabilitation at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital

Acute rehabilitation offers a comprehensive, intensive hospital-based program for medically stable patients who are able to participate in rehabilitation for a minimum of three hours daily. An interdisciplinary approach of two or more services is required, including rehab nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy. The goal is to return the patient to an independent level of functioning.

Centra Specialty Hospital

Centra Specialty Hospital, located at Virginia Baptist Hospital, provides long term acute care specializing in the care of patients with complex, extended medical needs. Patients are referred to the Centra Speciality Hospital for the continuation of acute medical care because the severity and complexity of their medical condition prevents them from being discharged home or transferred to a rehabilitation unit or skilled nursing facility. An individualized care plan is designed for each patient by a physician-led interdisciplinary team. The treatment objective is stabilization, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery to optimum functional ability.
