From the latest cancer-fighting technology to new state-of-the-art facilities and services, Centra offers excellent cancer care for patients and their families throughout central Virginia. Centra’s comprehensive cancer services and treatments range from the newest da Vinci Surgical System and Trilogy linear accelerator to chemotherapy, biological and targeted drug therapies to genetic testing and clinical trials.
Centra treats a broad range of cancers, including lung, prostate, breast, brain, kidney, bladder, ovarian, lymphoma, leukemia, colon, uterine and rectal cancers as well as many others. In 2008, Centra opened the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, which brought radiation and medical oncology into one facility, for patient convenience.
Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center
Designed with cancer patients and their families in mind, the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center combines a comprehensive array of services in a new center of hope and healing. A team of board-certified physicians and highly-skilled clinicians collaborates on personalized treatment plans for patients and supports them through every step of their cancer journeys. This team approach has earned Centra national recognition with a full accreditation with commendation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. In addition to radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, the multidisciplinary team includes a broad range of expertise from nurse practitioners and nurses to clinical trials, patient navigators, social workers and chaplaincy staff.
The Varian 21EX and Trilogy linear accelerators
Centra has invested in the world’s most powerful medical linear accelerators: the Varian 21EX and Trilogy. Both can target and penetrate tumors more efficiently than other technologies while protecting healthy tissue. The linear accelerators enable clinicians to perform computer-driven intensity modulated radiation therapy treatments and deliver higher doses of radiation with minimal harm to surrounding organs.
The da Vinci Surgical System for prostate cancer
Centra’s da Vinci surgical system provides surgeons with an alternative to traditional prostatectomy. The da Vinci system integrates three-dimensional, high-definition laparoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the surgical field. The system provides surgeons greater than twice the viewing resolution and 20 percent more viewing area, and allows them to perform a more exact operation. For the patient, this typically results in less pain, blood loss and scarring and reduces the risk of impotence and urinary incontinence. Patients have reduced complications, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery time.
Breast Imaging services and breast cancer services
Centra'sbreast imaging staff include three full-time radiologists who are dedicated to breast imaging and have more than six decades experience in interpreting breast studies as well as technologists with advanced certifications in mammography and ultrasound. Centra Mammography Centers are located at 20293 Timberlake Road and 1900 Tate Springs Road, Suite 1.In addition to screening locations in Lynchburg and Farmville, Centra’s mobile mammography screening van travels throughout the region to businesses and churches.

Support Services for Cancer Patients
Because cancer affects every part of a patient's life, Centra Health offers physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech and hearing therapy to help cancer patients regain maximum function and independence. Our dietitians help patients meet and plan for special nutritional needs during and after treatment. And our nursing staff helps manage the treatment of side effects and provides ways to control cancer symptoms and pain.
We also offer a number of support groups–-in cooperation with the American Cancer Society–for cancer patients and their families or close friends:
"Coping At Home" is a series of classes that provide practical information for caregivers on topics from bed making to giving pain medication and more.
"I Can Cope" is a series of programs that include physicians, nurses and other health professionals who talk about the day-to-day issues of living with cancer.
A cancer survivor support group and a cancer caregivers support group allow a free exchange of ideas and fellowship among people who are undergoing similar problems.
Man-To-Man is a prostate cancer education and support group that meets the third Tuesday of each month.
Breast cancer support groups are offered for women through our comprehensive breast program.
The Witness Project
The Witness Project is a health program for women in churches and community centers throughout central Virginia. It features a group of women who "witness" about their triumph over breast or cervical cancer. Together, they preach the good news that cancer doesn't have to be an automatic death sentence. The key is to catch it early and get it treated.
The project offers more than just hope, though. It also teaches women some simple things they can do in their own lives to protect themselves against breast cancer and cervical cancer. Things like breast self examination.
Trained health instructors at each program use special breast models to show the audience how they can check themselves for signs of breast cancer. The audience then gets a chance to practice what they've learned by searching for lumps in the models.
In addition, the instructors answer questions about things like Pap tests (a test to find cervical cancer) and mammograms (a special kind of X-ray to look for breast cancer). Women will have a chance to find out where in their community they can have tests done at low (or even some cases no) cost.
The Witness Project is a program that saves lives. If you want to know what you can do - or if you want to have this program at your church or organization, please call (434) 200-5127.
MAAM
MAAM (Mammography Annually A Must) is a local volunteer group associated with the Centra Health Foundation with a mission to raise awareness of the importance of screening mammograms. MAAM members have been touched by breast cancer and want to make a difference in the health of the region. The MAAM group increases awareness and promotes screening mammography by ensuring access to mammograms and increasing awareness about the importance of annual mammograms. MAAM helps to fund and organize free mammography screening days for the community and supports media campaigns to build awareness about mammography. For more information about the MAAM group please contact the Centra Health Foundation at 434.200.4790.
