Centra Heart and Vascular Marks 5th TAVR Anniversary on National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day

Today, National Heart Valve Disease Day and also marks the fifth anniversary of the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Program’s (TAVR) arrival in Lynchburg. The Centra Stroobants Heart and Vascular Institute has conducted close to 700 procedures since its arrival. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Heart surgeries to both extend life as well as increase quality of life, are ever in demand. TAVR is distinct because of its immediate effectiveness in the improvement in quality of life as well as its non-invasive nature.

The procedure repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place. This beneficial treatment provides options to patients who may have previously been considered too high risk for open heart surgery while also providing the added benefit of a faster recovery. Patients continue to report that they feel an immediate difference upon completion of the surgery.
