Applications for the program are accepted only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). All application materials must be transmitted electronically via ERAS from the individual medical schools. Please contact your medical school for information regarding this method of application. Your application will be carefully reviewed. If your application satisfactorily exceeds below requirements, invitations for a personal interview are shared via ERAS.

  • Contact with Residency Coordinator strictly to confirm receipt of application criteria is acceptable
  • Other inquiries or solicitation for interview invitation is discouraged


Minimum criteria for an interview with Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency for July 1st PGY1 Entry (Completion prior to December 31st of year prior to PGY1 entry - except where noted).

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • We do not sponsor work visas or await “pending applications for permanent residency” for those entering residency training
Board Scores (Either USMLE or COMLEX Scores are required as below)


  • Step 1 passing score, on first attempt preferred
  • Step 2 CK passing score, on first attempt preferred
  • Step 2 CSA "Pass" by Feb. 1 of the year of PGY1 entry on first attempt


  • Level 1 passing score, on first attempt preferred
  • Level 2 passing score, on first attempt preferred
  • Level 2 Performance Evaluation "Pass" by Feb 1 of year of PGY1 entry on first attempt
Graduation/Pending graduation from a LCME or COCA accredited medical school or valid ECFMG Certificate (whichever is applicable) recognized by all 50 states and US Territories, with either
  • Graduation expected within 1 year prior to July 1st PGY1 entry or
  • Graduation within 2 years of July 1st PGY1 entry, with
    • Valid ECFMG certificate (if applicable), and
    • Step3 Passage with U.S. Medical License, and
    • Other residency training in the U.S. within the last year with continued practice of pertinent clinical skills
Receipt through ERAS of:
  • Three Letters of Recommendation written within the last 6 months by clinicians clearly explains level of clinical supervision of the applicant within the last 6-12 months
  • "Dean's Letter"/MSPE from the Applicants Medical School
  • Complete Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Statement dated within 6 months
Medically fluent- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

No Adverse NRMP or Board Actions (pending or confirmed)

No unaccounted for delays in medical school training and employment

Must attend a face-to-face interview (except during ERAS-SOAP process) demonstrating excellence in:
  • Verbal communication skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Teamwork, listening, dealing with ambiguity and leadership
  • Commitment to and understanding of the scope of Family Medicine
  • Passion for longstanding therapeutic patient relationships

Further Criteria for Entry into PGY1

  • Graduation from LCME or COCA Accredited Medical School, or Valid ECMG Certificate (whichever is applicable)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) updated within two years of PGY1 entry
  • Return of all Needs Assessment and Background Check information sent after Matching with program. No exclusionary Background Check information identified
