Nursing at Centra

The helicopter lands on the tarmac and within seconds our nurses are saving a life. They smile at a new mother as her baby is placed in her arms. They connect with the family of a teenager in the intensive care unit and explain the medical care that's giving him a chance to heal. After her heart surgery, nurses help her recover and watch as she grows stronger and more confident. Nurse navigators guide patients through their care, coordinating treatments, explaining procedures and being there for them whenever they need.

These are just a few examples of the care provided by nurses at Centra. For patients, their family members, friends and caregivers, nurses are a prominent and integral part of the care provided by Centra. Their dedication, professionalism and compassion are the foundation of their work. As a result, Centra continues to receive national recognition through numerous awards, accreditations and accolades for quality, safety and patient satisfaction.

The highest honor in the nursing profession is earning Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center through their Magnet Recognition Program®. The program represents a commitment to excellence in nursing, innovations in professional nursing practice, and excellence in clinical care, safety and patient satisfaction.

In 2006, nurses at Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist hospitals were the first in our region to receive this honor. In 2010 and again in 2014, Centra’s two Lynchburg hospitals earned Magnet re-designation. Also in 2014, the nurses with Centra Medical Group achieved their first Magnet designation. Less than seven percent of U.S. hospitals receive Magnet designation, and achieving the designation for a third-time places Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist hospitals in the top three percent of U.S. hospitals.

For patients, their family members, friends and caregivers, nurses are a prominent and integral part of the care provided by Centra. Nurses’ dedication, professionalism and compassion are the foundation of their work. As a result, Centra continues to receive national recognition through numerous awards, accreditations and accolades for quality, safety and patient satisfaction. Simply put, Centra Nurses help patients and families achieve the best health outcomes possible.

At Centra, Nurses provide the Core of Caring. Centra Nurses approach care in a unique way with patient/family/community centered care that recognizes that family is a constant in the patient’s life and that the nurse is the coordinator of patient care and the leader of the interdisciplinary team. Patient/ family/community care is individualized and based on patient and family needs; spiritual, physical, emotional and psycho-social.

Patient/Family/Community Centered Care provides the core of our model of care.

Centra Nurses demonstrate caring through:

  • Spiritual, physical, emotional, psycho-social, and developmental needs assessment
  • Integration of individualized needs into the patient/family plan of care
  • Culturally congruent care and education
  • Consideration of the individual patient as well as their family and support system
  • Commitment to our patient, family and visitors
  • Collaboration and communication to provide continuity throughout the continuum of care with patients/families and all members of our interdisciplinary care team

Centra Nurses base their work on a Professional Practice model that is based on their core commitment to patients, families and the community. Centra Nurses work in a shared governance environment where nurses are empowered to make decisions related to patient care and nursing practice. This environment supports the Professional Practice Model to encompass effective communication, collaboration, excellence in professional practice and professional development. This model is based on professional autonomy, accountability, competency, professional standards and collaboration.
