Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital Now Offers 3D Mammography

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital is excited to announce the addition of 3D mammography services.

Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, 3D mammography captures images of the breast from multiple angles to ensure a more complete and accurate scan. This enhanced visibility allows for earlier and more effective detection of breast cancer and helps reduce the need for patients to undergo additional testing.

During the 3D part of the exam, the x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in a matter of seconds. These images are then used to produce a three-dimensional view of breast tissue in one-millimeter slices. This allows radiologists greater visibility to see detail in breast tissue to help find cancers that may have previously been missed and reduce the chance doctors will call back unnecessarily. A 3D mammogram follows the same basic procedure of standard 2D digital mammography and requires no additional breast compression and lasts only a few seconds longer than a 2D mammogram.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this state-of-the-art technology and further enhance the high-quality care we provide to the women in our community,” said Anita Gillespie, Director of Breast Imaging.  “Our 3D mammography service will help make it possible to detect breast cancer in earlier stages so that treatment can begin sooner, giving our patients a greater chance of beating the disease.”

Regular mammogram screenings are recommended for women age 40 and above as an essential tool for early detection and the fight against breast cancer.

Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital is proud to offer the latest in 3D mammogram technology to our community. To schedule a 3D mammogram in Bedford, visit or call 540.587.7806/434.200.4048.
