Centra Begins Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Program

With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death in the United States heart surgeries to both extend life as well as increase quality of life, are ever in demand.  Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, (TAVR) does both and is now available in Lynchburg at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

While extensive knowledge of the various cardiovascular surgeries is not something that is generally known, unless it affects a loved one or one’s self, this procedure is distinct because of its immediate effectiveness in the improvement in quality of life as well as its non-invasive nature.

Fadi El-Ahdab, M.D. and Kenneth Saum, M.D. lead the TAVR Heart team that consists of fellow cardiothoracic surgeon Houman Tavaf, M.D. as well as Crystal Ransom a Cardiac Nurse Practitioner. Dr. El-Ahdab is excited for the benefits of procedure and stated, “TAVR is minimally invasive, does not require a surgical incision and has a short recovery in most patients. It has been shown to prolong life and significantly improve the quality of life in patients with aortic valve stenosis.”

The procedure repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place.  This beneficial treatment provides options to patients who may have previously been considered too high risk for open heart surgery while also providing the added benefit of a faster recovery.  Patients continue to report that they feel an immediate difference upon completion of the surgery.

Centra’s commitment to bring innovative surgeries such as TAVR extended to having a room specially designed and built within the cardiac catheterization lab.

Centra is excited to continue to develop and expand services, such as TAVR, to meet the ever changing and growing needs of Central Virginia and its thriving communities.  Dr. El-Ahdab states, “We welcome patients with aortic valve disease in our clinic irrespective of their age or other medical conditions.”
