Centra Finalizes Bedford Memorial Hospital Purchase

Thursday, July 10, 2014

In January of 2014, Centra announced its decision to solely own and operate Bedford Memorial Hospital by purchasing Carilion’s half of the organization. July 1st marks the first day of the new ownership.

With the transaction complete, Centra will begin making investments in both facilities and staff at Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital. Centra will spend $1.5 million to $2 million in capital per year for the next three to five years to upgrade and grow the hospital. There will be updates to the emergency department as ambulatory care is ramped up, changes to long term care, modifications to the infrastructure of the buildings, more advanced medical equipment, improved technology and even cosmetic changes around the hospital. The recruitment of new physicians to the area is already underway with several new providers joining Centra this summer.

“With Centra, we will be better together,” said Patti Jurkus, CEO of Bedford Memorial Hospital. “Through this purchase, Bedford Memorial Hospital will become part of Centra and have the support of a large regional healthcare system. “

Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital is a full-service 50-bed medical facility with special emphasis on outpatient surgery, emergency services, geriatrics, and 111- beds dedicated to rehabilitative services. The facility offers 24-hour emergency care, to more than 16,000 patients annually.

“This purchase is not only a homecoming for me, it’s an opportunity to strengthen the community’s access to high quality healthcare,” said E.W. Tibbs, President and CEO of Centra. “Combining these two organizations connects the residents of Bedford to the specialists and services they need, close to home.”

In celebration of this milestone, Centra will host an event on July 1st from 3 to 6pm. on the front lawn of Bedford Memorial Hospital. Centra CEO, E.W. Tibbs and Bedford Memorial Hospital’s CEO, Patti Jurkus will speak at 4:30. Festivities are open to the community.
