Centra Foundation Announces 2014 Grant Recipients

The Centra Foundation has awarded 22 grants totaling $513,870.45 to support health-related projects and programs in the community through the Centra Community Health Initiative Fund. Funds for the grants are administered by the Centra Foundation and come directly from Centra. These grants will touch the lives of many people by funding and supporting programs that will directly improve the community’s health.

Balance: Healthy Mind and Body                                                                $102,000

Amazement Square: To support the completion of the 2,400 square foot Centra Gallery which will highlight an interactive set of exhibits that focus on healthy lifestyles, nutrition and anti-obesity education.

Centra Virginia HIV Testing and Counseling Project                                              $10,000

(CHAPS) Coalition for HIV Awareness and Prevention: This grant will support the purchase of HIV rapid tests and to provide counseling and follow-up services to HIV positive individuals.

The CPR Anytime Project                                                                             $10,000

American Heart Association (Mid-Atlantic Affiliate): To support the purchase of CPR kits to train individuals in CPR skills and host ten large community training sessions.

Equipment Upgrade              $4,718.45

Adult Care Center of Central Virginia: To support the purchase of a med chart and wheelchair scale.

Fit to Live                                                                                                       $8,617

Piedmont Community Impact Organization: To support the purchase of a blood pressure monitor, fitness equipment, digital scales, glucose meter and body fat monitor.

Helping our Neighbors Program                                                                  $10,000

Gleaning for the World: To support the purchase of clothing, shoes and food for families in Central Virginia.

Incredible Years                                                                                             $5,698

Elizabeth’s Early Learning Center: To support the Incredible Years Curriculum for children, which focuses on behavior management and the development of social and emotional skills.

Integrative Health Team: Increasing Access for Primary Care                  $91,000

Johnson Health Center: To support positions who will assist adult patients living with serious mental illness who do not have a primary care physician.

Live Strong at the YMCA – Farmville                                                                       $9,581

Southside Virginia Family YMCA: To support scholarships for cancer survivors and to purchase training materials.

MIND (Moving in New Directions) at the Fort Hill School                                    $5,000

Mental Health America of Central Virginia, Couples and Kids: To support a pilot program for students ages 12-17 with behavioral issues that cannot be addressed in a traditional school environment.

Parkinson’s Wellness Program                                                                     $3,700

            YMCA of Central Virginia: To support certification of staff and rehab equipment.

Prevention and Early Detection Initiative                                                  $1,380

Heart of Virginia Free Clinic: To support the purchase of flu vaccines for needy patients.

Take Charge: Priority Care Transitions Program                                        $30,000

Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging, Inc.: To support an RN and licensed social worker who will provide care and oversight to elderly patients recently discharged from Centra hospitals.

Radiology Equipment Digital Modernization                                             $3,510

Central VA Community College Educational Foundation, Inc.: To support the purchase of digital radiology equipment that will be used for education and training purposes.

Reaching Rural Victims of Domestic & Sexual Violence in their Home    $28,000


Southside Center for Violence Prevention - Madeline’s House: To support satellite clinics for abused women.

Rural Health Outreach Program Health Compass                                      $12,000

Blue Ridge Medical Center: To support medical supplies, mobile medical van upkeep and medical equipment.

RX Partnership                                                                                               $10,000

RX Drug Access Partnership: To provide free prescription medications to patients of the Lynchburg and Bedford Free Clinics.

SA-TAPS: Substance Abuse Transportation Access and Peer Support     $46,678

Farmville Crossroads Community Services Board: To support a peer and a part-time therapist to identify, evaluate and treat individuals with substance abuse issues.

Specific Funds Needed for Medical/Pharmaceutical Programs                $21,000

Free Clinic of Central Virginia, Inc.: To support the purchase of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and equipment.

Summer Camp Scholarships and 3-Point Play Program                            $12,500

Jubilee Family Development Center: To support partial scholarships for local disadvantaged children to attend Jubilee summer camp which focuses on healthy lifestyles.

Vehicle Replacement Project                                                                                   $25,000

Bedford Memorial Hospital - Bedford Adult Day Care: To support the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible van to be used to transport individuals to the center.

Women’s Health Services Communication Education Care Programs     $63,488

Centra Women and Children’s Services: To support two positions which will enable expansion of Centra’s prenatal program in our community and address neonatal health disparities in the African American community.
