Centra Southside Community Hospital Unveils New Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Farmville, Virginia— Cutting-edge cardiac catheterization lab will open at Centra Southside Community Hospital April 18, 2016. This catheterization lab will give patients access to minimally invasive techniques available to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. Dr. Rakesh Jain will lead the interventional cardiology program and is bringing over thirty years of experience to the Farmville community.

“Cath labs save lives and bringing one to the sole hospital provider within 50 miles, is life changing for our patients and their families,” says Tom Angelo, CEO of Centra Southside Community Hospital.  “Dr. Jain has an outstanding reputation and will be an excellent addition to our medical staff and community.”

Every second counts when it comes to a heart attack. The faster a physician can restore vital blood flow to the heart muscle the less damage there will likely be. To restore blood flow, cardiologists work in a cardiac catheterization lab using a stent or balloon to open the blocked artery. The new cardiac catheterization lab creates the ability to have the most streamlined process for needed immediate care saving time, and lives.

“This new cardiac catheterization lab will allow us to continue to provide the most comprehensive heart care available in the area, and enhance our ability to treat advanced cardiovascular disease,” said Tom Angelo. “This project is a true example of what a community hospital can achieve when it commits to delivering the highest-quality patient care.”

The new lab, located near the emergency department, features the latest generation of cardiovascular technology.  This technology can shorten the procedure time, potentially reduce hospital stay and offers enhanced safety by reducing radiation doses.

“With 30 years in cardiology and 26 of those years in private practice, I have performed close to 15,000 cath and angioplasty/stents during that time,” says interventional cardiologist, Rakesh Jain, MD, of the Centra Medical Group Stroobants Cardiovascular Center.
