Thank you for considering Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital for your care.  We have prepared the information below as a guide to answer general questions you may have during your stay at the hospital.

Your Room

We want you to be comfortable during your stay.  Your room will be cleaned daily, however if you need additional  housekeeping services please contact Environmental Services.  If your bed, nursecall button, telephone, television, room temperature control, lights or bathroom require attention, you may contact the plant engineering department or tell your nurse.  Phone numbers  for these departments are located in your patient handbook in your room.

Telephone

Making calls: Telephones are available in all our patient rooms and patients may call out 24 hours a day.  To make local calls dial 9, then the number.  Long distance calls are not allowed unless you use a calling card with a toll-free number.

Receiving calls: Give your room telephone number to your family and friends so they may call you directly.  To ensure your rest, patient phones are turned off for incoming calls between 8:00pm and 7:00am. 

Wireless Internet Access

Wireless internet access is free of charge.  Please note that it is not secure or encrpted, and you should use this service as you would any other free wireless connection.

Instructions to connect:

  • Enable your wireless network
  • Search for wireless networks.  Your computer/mobile device should detect "Centra Guest"
  • Open your browser and connect to any website
  • You will be presented with a welcome page with a login button
  • Click the login button.  You will be directed to www.centrahealth.com
  • Begin browsing the internet

Your Meals

A doctor has ordered either a regular or special diet as part of your treatment.  A comprehensive room service program is available  which includes a restaurant style room service menu to be used for ordering.  Patients should call *EAT from their room phone to reach our call center.  The call center representatives will help each patient with appropriate meal selections.  They will be happy to explain any special dietary needs you may have or refer further questions to a registered dietitian.

Spiritual Care

Chaplains at Centra are professionally trained, board certified clergy.  Their primary ministry is to those patients, residents and family members who need support throughout the journey of illness, injury and recovery.  Our chaplains recognize that our patients and residents come from all walks of life and bring with them a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds.  If you wish to talk with a chaplain, please tell your nurse, or call  425-7594

Case Managers

Qualified hospital case managers are available to provide support for you and your family during hospitalization, identifying discharge needs,referrals for social services and planning for your discharge.  There is no charge for this service.  If you wish to speak to a case manager, pelase tell your nurse or call the case management office at 425-7740.

Mental Health Services

If you are suffering from emotional stress such as anxiety,depression, fear, loneliness, feelings of loss, sexual concerns or other issues, please let your nurse or doctor know.  We offer a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse services for our patients and their families.  You may also call our Mental Health Intake & Resource Center at 434-200-4444.

Rapid Response Team

The Hospitalist group also manages the physician component of the Rapid Response Team.  The nursing staff, patient or patient's family member can ask for a rapid response to an urgently developing problem with any patient in the hospital at any time.  We respond within 10 minutes, assisting in the stabilization of these patients and transferring the patient to higherlevels of care when necessary.  Please call from your room by dialing "0" and request a rapid response team.

Valuables

You are encouraged to leave all valuables at home, including cash.  If you must bring valuables with you to the hospital, please tell yournurse so he/she can arrange to have them locked in the safe.  Valuables are items such as jewelry, cash, credit, debit and other cards, and driver's licenses.  Large purses and pocketbooks cannot be accepted because they will not fit in the safe.  Centra is not responsible for valuables or cash kept in your room.

Keep eyeglasses and dentures in a secure place.  A special cup is available for dentures.  Never wrap eyeglasses or dentures and leave them on a table, meal tray or bed.

For Your Safety

Personal care items such as electric razors, hair dryaers and other electrical equipment must be checked for compliance with hospital regulations.  If you have any electrical items with you, please tell your nurse.

During your stay, you may hear various alarm bells.  We hold regular fire and disaster drills as part of our concern for your safety and well-being.  Your care will not be interrupted during these drills.  Should a situation arise, you can be assured that you will be moved to safety immediately.

Infection Prevention

All visitors, physicians, nurses and other health care workers must perform hand hygiene beforeand after visiting or careing for our patients.  Appropriate hand hygiene - washing your hands with soap and water or using waterless alcohol hand sanitizer - is the single most important way to prevent the spread of disease and illness.  Ask your care providers if they have washed their hands before caring for you.

Anyone with signs or symptoms of a respiratory infection should follow these simple steps for the protection of others:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Use tissues to contain respiratory secretions and sipose of them in the nearest wast receptacle after use.
  • Perform hand hygiene after having contact with respiratory secrections.
  • patients may be asked to wear a mask while in a common waiting area or during transport from one area within the hospital to another.

Cell Phones

Cell phones may be used in Centra facilities, but should not be used inside any critical care units, the emergency department or surgical areas within three feet of any medical equipment.  The unit nursing manager or administration has the discretion to prohibit cell phone use within a patient's room or other area of the hospital at any time for any reason.  

It is recommended that all cell phone conversations take place in waiting areas, int he cafeteria, or outside the hospital.  Please remember patient information privacy when using any phone within the hospital.

Cafeteria

Guests are welcome to eat in any Centra cafeteria.  The BMH Cafeteria is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 9:00am for breakfast and 11:00am - 1:30pm for lunch.

A variety of foods, from hot entrees to soups, salad bar, sandwiches and grilled items are featured.  Hot entrees are available for breakfast and lunch.  Snacks and drinks are also available in vending machines.

Gift Shop

The BMH Gift Shop, "Tickled Pink", is located at the main entrance adjacent to the Emergency Department. "Tickled Pink" is operated by volunteers and is a full-service gift shop stocked with gifts, snacks, drinks, and personal care items.  The shop accepts phone orders to 540-587-3374 and major credit cards are welcome.

Volunteer Services

Our volunteers are residents from our community who devote their time, energy and talents to making your stay in our hospital more pleasant. We offer guest services in our main lobby to assist visitors while their family members or friends are in surgery or in the hospital.  Volunteers are located at the front desk in the hospital's main lobby to assist you.

Security

Security officers are on duty throughout the hospital 24 hours a day.  Nighttime visitors can call the operator at extension "0" to have an escort back to the parking area.

Smoking

Bedford Memorial is a smoke-free facility and campus.  Smoking is not permitted within the hospital.

Visitor Guidelines

We encourage visitors, but all visitors must follow these guidelines:

  • Visiting hours are 8:00am - 8:00pm
  • Check with the nursing station for specific visitation hours.
  • The number of visitors may be restricted based on the patient's condition
  • Visitors are not allowed in patient rooms when the "No Visitors" sign is posted on the door
  • Visitors may be asked to leave the room when the patient is with his/her doctor or nurse
  • Visitors may only take photographs of patients  with signed permission from the patient.  All other photography is strictly prohibited
  • Visitors must  be free of  all symptoms of illness.
  • Visitors must abide by all hospital policies at all times.  Disruptive visitors will be asked to leave the premesis immediiately.

Insurance

We will file a claim with your insurance company and make every reasonable effort to collect payment.  Please notify us if there is any incorrect information on the bill, such as your address or insurance carrier.  Incorrect information can cause unnecessary delays.
