Sports Medicine

Sports medicine deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Our sports medicine specialists treat joint sprains, arthritis, fractures tendonitis, and more in athletes of all ages. If a sports injury or medical condition has sidelined you from your favorite activity, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan to meet your unique needs and get you back in the game.

Simple steps to avoid injuries:

A little exercise goes a long way, but take it slow because sports injuries, including sprains and strains, often occur from pushing your body too quickly. Whether hiking, jogging, weight lifting or playing competitive sports, know your limits and gradually let your body reach its potential.

Stay hydrated. Take in plenty of water each day. Drinking the right amount of fluids will prevent cramping. If working out for over an hour, consider a sports drink to replenish electrolytes.

Use the right equipment. Wear loose fitting clothes during workouts. Make sure your equipment – tennis shoes or even a baseball glove – fit correctly.

Use sunscreen. Spending time in the sunlight provides Vitamin D, which boosts immunity and health, but too much can be dangerous.

Stretch. There is always the temptation to try the same workout or physical activity you mastered 10 years ago. Recognize that your body changes and work yourself up to better performance. Stretch for five to 10 minutes before and after a workout.

Use common sense. If something hurts, ease up on your workout. Don’t ignore an injury. Early consultation and treatment with a doctor can make a big difference.

Focus on nutrition. Food is fuel. Make sure you aren’t cheating yourself by eating poorly. Focus on lean meats, fresh vegetables and fruits. A little portion control can make a huge difference. Taking in carbohydrates before a workout feeds your muscles. Consider using a smartphone app to help track eating and exercise.

Thirty minutes of exercise each day can make a huge difference in your health. To avoid burnout, switch up your workouts to keep it fresh each day. Most importantly, use exercise as an opportunity to relax and remove stress. No matter your level of fitness, activity and movement will help. Remember, it’s not about where you start, it’s about where you end up and the journey it takes to get there.
