Donors provide critical resources to support Centra’s COVID-19 pandemic response efforts

First X-ray units already shipped; ventilators arriving early May

March 2020

The Centra Foundation released funding of $962,925 in late March to purchase six new ventilators, five digital portable X-ray machines and to conduct a public health education campaign about COVID-19 for the Centra service area.

Ventilators are in high demad globally and across the United States, and rentals are scarce.

“We need these additional ventilators to take care of a potential patient surge and to be equipped with the latest technology to serve patients in the future,” said Siminne Duff, BS, RRT, respiratory care interim director.  “We are so grateful to Foundation donors for meeting this need!”

Portable X-ray machines will ensure continued safety by enabling caregivers to capture images, send and receive reports without having to exit and re-enter a patient’s room.

“This is a game changer for us, for our patients, and for how we provide care for the entire hospital,” said Annette Price, RT, R BBA, radiology’s coordinator of diagnostic services. “We can now put a digital portable [X-ray machine] on our COVID units to know instantly if we have provided a good image. The image will be immediately available for the physician to make decisions on next steps.”

“The Foundation is supporting this region’s effort to be proactive and care for our communities in these unprecedented times,” said Beth Doyle, executive vice president. “Without our donors’ loyal support over the years, we would not be able to help Centra meet its current challenges.”
