What is Health Career Camp?

Centra’s summer Health Career Camp I provides a week of activities and observation experience for 24 rising high school juniors interested in exploring the exciting world of Health Care Careers. Students have an opportunity to explore the various facets of Health Care at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, and the PACE Center. Over the course of a week students will be exposed to various facets of health care which may include:

  • Cardiovascular/ Cardiology Services

  • Emergency Department

  • Ethics

  • Geriatric Activity Therapies

  • Infection Control

  • IV Therapy

  • Medical Ethics/Pastoral Care

  • Medical Laboratory and Pathology

  • Neurology

  • Nursing

  • Oncology/ Cancer Services

  • Orthopedics

  • Outpatient Cancer Care

  • Pharmacy

  • Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy

  • Pulmonary

  • Radiology

  • Respiratory Therapy

  • Surgical Services

Applicant Requirements:

Must be a current sophomore for school year 2018-2019 and a rising high school junior for fall 2019.

  • Must have a true interest in a career in health care.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5/C average overall or the equivalent within your school’s grading scale or greater.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from facilities each day for the duration of the camp.
  • Must complete the application found at this website by 5:00 p.m. Friday, April19, 2019, and include two essays as explained on the application. (Essays are the determining factor for acceptance into the camp.)
  • Registration fee of $30.00, checks to be made out to Centra. Refundable if child is not accepted into the camp or Centra is notified the child will not attend the camp prior to the date of the orientation, June 14, 2019.
  • Must have parental permission to attend the camp, found on the application.
  • Must have updated immunizations to include two Varicella Vaccines and 2 MMR Vaccines (required at orientation)
  • Must have proof of current TB Skin Test or parental permission for a TB Skin Test completed. (required at orientation)
  • Must have two academic references (forms found on the application):
    • One from a high school guidance counselor.
    • One from a science or math teacher.
  • If you are home schooled, for the counselor recommendation you may use any adult who knows your background and future goals outside of family members. Please ask them to identify their relationship to you on the form.

2019 Program Specifics:

Dates: June 17-21, 2019 Time: 8:30a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Orientation: June 14, 2019 Time 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Cost:  Registration fee of $30.00, checks to be made out to Centra. Refundable if child is not accepted into the camp or Centra is notified child will not attend the camp prior to the date of the orientation, June 14, 2019. Campers will need to have money for lunch or bring lunch.

2019 Application Instructions:
Please read before completing the application.

*****All applications and recommendations must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., April 19, 2019.

  1. Download the application to your computer to complete or print and complete it manually. Fill out page one completely

  2. Please answer the essay questions found on page 6. Because good communication skills and attention to detail are so important in a healthcare career, the essay is the determining factor for acceptance into the camp.  Grammar, spelling, and content are considered in reviewing the essays.

  3. Have parents or guardians complete and sign the parental permission to attend camp found on page 6 of the application.  Do not forget to enclose check for $30.00 registration fee, made out to Centra.

  4. Have 2 recommendations completed by April 20. One must be by your high school counselor. The other must be either a math or science teacher. If you are home schooled for the counselor recommendation you may use any adult who knows your background and future goals outside of family members. Please ask them to identify their relationship to you on the form. You may do this one of three ways:

  • Email your counselor and teacher the link to the application.

  • Download the application and email it to them as an attachment.

  • Print the recommendations off and have them complete it by hand. I prefer the recommendations be faxed, emailed or mailed to me directly from them, but they may give them to you in a sealed envelope to attach with your application. The envelopes should not be opened by you or your parents.

  1. Notification of selections will be mailed the week of May 6, 2019. Acceptance letters with required paperwork will be mailed that week.  There will be a camp waiting list in case of cancellation by an accepted participant. Any applicant that is not accepted into the camp will have their registration fee check returned with their notification.
  2. Candidate Acceptances must be returned to Centra by May 28, 2019.
