What was difficult, painful, or frustrating about your life before weight loss?

The most frustrating part about being overweight is missing out. As your weight increases, there are things that begin to be physically harder or impossible to do. For example, you encounter weight limits for recreational things, such as fitting into seats for amusement rides, and other restrictions based on size and weight.

As my weight and size increased, there were many simple things I could no longer do without difficulty. For example, I had difficulty putting on socks and shoes, painting my toenails, picking things up off the floor, bending over to retrieve items that may have fallen on the floorboard of the vehicle, wondering if I was going to fit into a booth, and being out of breath every time I walked any distance. One of the most embarrassing things was that it was difficult to do some simple personal hygiene care. It was also harder to do some of the things that I loved like gardening.

There were things that began to be painful. My hips would hurt at night because of the pressure on them. I had experienced some health issues that could be directly related to my weight.

I had tried other ways to lose weight. I also had short-term success with many of the different diets and medication to lose weight, but it was always short lived, and then I would have the regain (and plus) that so many experience.

Why did you choose Centra Weight Loss Services for your bariatric care?

Being a nurse that monitors quality and outcomes of care – this was one of the most important concerns I had with choosing a place for bariatric care. I needed to know things like the number of times he had performed bariatric surgery and his infection and complication rate. After attending Dr. Alley’s weight loss seminar, I knew that this was a program I wanted to further investigate as he was very upfront with his experience in performing bariatric surgery. I was not disappointed, from the moment I first walked in, my experience has been amazing. The team’s approach to my care is like no other care I have received. By the time I had surgery, I felt prepared to utilize the new tool I was given in my weight loss journey.

What is something you’re most excited about or most proud of after losing weight?

I am so happy with the results I have achieved using this tool. I have so much more energy for the day-to-day things in life. I use the stairs now instead of the elevator at work. I am so happy that my health has improved. I am no longer on blood pressure medication, no longer pre-diabetic, and I have been able to discontinue my CPAP. I have incorporated exercise in my life (I am not perfect in this, but I am getting better). I am most proud that I have completed the Virginia 4-mile walk and the I Am Woman 5K. I am going zip lining in February and have plans to complete one thing I have always wanted to do, and that is skydive in the spring.

Can you describe your comfort with the quality of care and the people caring for you, before, during, and after your surgery?

My experience with Centra’s Weight Loss Center has been amazing. I have felt, from the very first exposure, that they truly cared about my success in losing weight. My first meeting with Dr. Alley, he said to me that whether I choose to do surgery or not was not what dictated the care that I was to receive. In other words, the goal for my care was always weight loss. Whether I achieved my weight loss through the diet and life style changes that Centra helped me to learn or whether I chose to go even further and have bariatric surgery, the choice was always mine to make, and they would continue to be there for me regardless of my choice.

From day one to a little over a year post-surgical, my experience with Dr. Alley, Amy, Linsey, Emily, and Diane has been phenomenal and continues to be through things like support group and reinforcing that if I need anything to continue to be successful to call them. I can say, because I am an information seeker and have talked to others that have received care elsewhere, that I would say Centra’s care is amongst the best, based on what others tell me of their experience.

What is the one thing you would share with someone who is just thinking about weight loss surgery for the first time?

The one thing I would share to someone considering weight loss surgery for the first time is that if you are interested, then take that first step and come to the Dr. Alley’s seminar. For me, attending Dr. Alley’s Seminar was my first step in taking back parts of my life that my weight was causing me to miss out on by providing me a tool for successful weight loss.
