What was difficult, painful, or frustrating about your life before weight loss?

Any amount of distance walking was difficult for me before my surgery.  Even at age 36, my feet, knees, hips and back already hurt from the additional weight. I was tired ALL THE TIME. Little did I realize, but I had severe sleep apnea and required a CPAP machine at night. It was also frustrating for my husband because I constantly snored at night. My daily energy level was very low and found it difficult just to make it through the work day without feeling like I needed a nap.  Exercise was out of the question because it was painful. I had plantar fasciitis in my foot from the additional weight which was totally resolved after the weight loss. I had high blood pressure, which was embarrassing for someone at my age. I was on medication for the blood pressure and my primary physician wanted to put me on cholesterol medication also. All those things resolved after the surgery. I was back in the gym within a week of my surgery.

Why did you choose Centra Weight Loss Services for your bariatric care?

I chose Centra for my weight loss care because I felt very comfortable with every one of the team members. When I first heard Dr. Alley speak at a seminar, I knew he was a very knowledgeable and experienced surgeon.  Being a Centra employee myself, I asked colleagues and they sang the praises of Dr. Alley.  I also liked the idea of having my care team locally if any problems or questions were to arise.

What is something you’re most excited about or most proud of after losing weight?

I have more than enough energy to make it through the day.  I exercise at least 5 days of the week.  I feel more confident because I was able to accomplish my weight loss goal AND keep the weight off.  It’s one thing to lose the weight but the challenge is keeping it off.  I am proud that people seek me out to ask questions about weight loss and surgery.  I have had people reach out to me on Facebook or at work and it encourages me to help/encourage others on their weight loss journey.

Can you describe your comfort with the quality of care and the people caring for you, before, during, and after your surgery?

Linsey, the nurse coordinator made me feel comfortable from the very first visit.  She actually became a friend of mine.  She helped me maneuver through all of the pre-requisites preoperatively and removed several road blocks I experienced.  Dr. Alley was always very down to earth and approachable.  I was impressed by his knowledge and I took everything he told me to heart.  One piece of information that really resonated was his philosophy of creating healthy habits.  He knows realistically that we will “mess up” every once in a while, because we are human, but if we have established healthy eating and exercise habits we will fall back into these habits when we’ve strayed.  Amy was very helpful and knowledgeable about nutrition and the pre- and post-op diet.  She was very helpful with staying on track and with encouragement through successes and set-backs.  I appreciate everyone’s friendliness, encouragement, and help.

What is the one thing you would share with someone who is just thinking about weight loss surgery for the first time?

Make sure you are ready, mentally and physically.  I was contemplating surgery 2 years before I went through with it.  Originally, I was having the surgery at UVA because that was my closest option but was so glad to hear that Dr. Alley was performing the surgery locally.  I am glad I waited because I was not ready to make drastic changes to my activity level and diet.  Once I did make the decision, with the help of the healthcare team, I was able to be successful.
