New Rivermont School opens in NOVA

Thursday, September 8, 2016

Centra Health has opened its 11th private day school, Rivermont School-NOVA, in Springfield, Virginia.

Rivermont Schools provide a therapeutic educational program for students (ages 6-22) with special needs including autism. Jenny Oxendine is principal of the new school, located at 6700 Springfield Center Drive.

Rivermont’s professional staff includes certified special education teachers, mental health counselors, licensed professional counselors, board certified behavior analysts and school administrators. The skilled and experienced team teaches students to rely upon their personal strengths in order to solve problems, make better choices and achieve both short and long term success.

Highlights of Rivermont’s program include academic rigor, school-wide PBIS, social skills development, individual and group counseling, career readiness and partnerships with community colleges across the Commonwealth.

Rivermont School was one of the first special education programs in Virginia to develop a dual curriculum teaching and learning model, which remains the foundation of its programming. The schools team special education teachers with mental health counselors within each classroom for the entire day. They closely follow each student’s individualized education plan (IEP) designed to meet his or her specific needs. Classes are small with a student-staff ratio that provides students with ample opportunity for personalized instruction.

Students are referred to Rivermont School through the public school systems' special education departments in conjunction with Community Policy and Management Teams (CPMT) and Family Assessment and Planning Teams (FAPT).

Rivermont Schools are licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities (VAISEF) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancED-SACS).

Established in 1987, Rivermont Schools are part of Centra’s broad range of mental health and educational programs for children and adolescents, including Bridges Treatment Center, a residential program in Lynchburg. Other Rivermont School campuses are located in Lynchburg, Roanoke, Danville, Chase City, Covington, Hampton, Lexington, Petersburg, Fredericksburg and Virginia Beach.
