Melissa P. Bui, MD

Dr. Bui works with Centra’s Psychiatric Emergency Services and provides consultation and liaison services to patients at Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals.

Most recently, Dr. Bui has spent the last two years as faculty of Harvard Medical School serving as the associate program director for the Brigham and Women’s/Harvard Medical School Psychiatry Residency Program. She has also served as an associate psychiatrist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

Dr. Bui has lectured at professional meetings and has published many papers in medical journals. She has received several honors and awards including memberships in Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society in medical school, the Medical Student Teaching Award from Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program and the Karl Jaspers Award from the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry.

Dr. Bui’s areas of clinical interest include the role of proactive psychiatric consultation in patient care, and managing neuropsychiatric conditions which are common in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She has spent the last two years as an embedded psychiatrist in the Medical ICU at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and has conducted research examining the clinical and financial benefits of this intervention. Her work has demonstrated shorter lengths of stay for ICU patients exposed to an embedded psychiatry model, as well as significantly lower hospital costs. Dr. Bui is interested in continuing her work with the ICU patient population as part of her consultation liaison focus at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Dr. Bui is joined by her husband, Dr. An (Barry) Bui, who will be joining the CMG Stroobants Cardiovascular Center as a Cardiac Electrophysiologist.
