Am I a candidate?

Bariatric surgery is an important decision in your life and is not without risks. Patients who can safely have the surgery will usually be included in the list below:

  • Ages 20 - 70
  • Tried other weight loss techniques
  • Ready for dramatic healthy lifestyle change
  • Understand that surgery alone is not a "magic wand"
  • Agree to a lifetime of medical follow-up
  • Must be able to exercise
  • Not bedridden or scooter-dependent
  • No severe heart, lung, or liver disease
  • Six months tobacco-free

Body Mass Index or BMI is another way to identify if you are a potential candidate for bariatric surgery. Individuals with a BMI greater than 40, or a BMI of 35-39 with at least one weight-related health condition could be candidates for bariatric surgery.
