Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Centra Neurosciences Program is leading the field in advanced surgery techniques by offering minimally invasive surgery with cutting-edge technology and ground-breaking treatment approaches.   


The Neurosciences program at Centra is supported by our NICU (Neurological Intensive Care Unit), located inLynchburg General Hospital. This unit is designed for patients requiring special nursing care and equipment for their recovery. Patients in the unit typically are recovering from head injuries, accidents, falls and other trauma, brain tumors, seizures, or carotid endarterectomies.


The Neuroscience program is also supported by our NIMU (Neurological Intermediate Care Unit), located in Lynchburg General Hospital. This unit is a 13 bed Intermediate Care Nursing Unit that is designed specifically for patients who require intermediate care nursing from a neurological perspective as well as acute and intermediate stroke care. The unit and the staff are equipped and trained to care for the immediate needs and recovery of our patient population as well as the families of our patients.

National Recognition

US News and World Report recently recognized Centra as a High Performing hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Centra Lynchburg General Hospital has earned The Joint Commission's National Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers, and is the first hospital in central, southside and western Virginia to earn this honor.

This national certification recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care and means Centra complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care, according to The Joint Commission.

Centra’s Lynchburg General Hospital has also achieved the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for Stroke Care. Gold Plus is the highest level of achievement through the GWTG Program, and Centra is the first in the region to receive the honor.

What is Neuroscience

Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system. It is a field that works to understand the structure and function of the nervous system and brain.  Neurosciences is a cornerstone program at Centra. Each year, over 500 neurosurgery procedures are performed at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. These procedures range from surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, relieve back pain, or to treat brain tumors and aneurysms.
