Childbirth and Family Education Classes

Childbirth and Family Education at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital offers a variety of classes to meet your childbirth and family needs. Our instructors are certified and class size is small to ensure a good experience. All classes are held in the Center for Childbirth and Family Education at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Preparing for Childbirth Class, Four Week Series

Cost: $60/mom and support person
This interactive class provides labor and delivery preparation for the pregnant woman and her support person. Together you will gain knowledge of the birth process and be able to make personal decisions related to your birth experience.

Preparing for Childbirth, Weekend Class

Cost: $60/mom and support person
Available one weekend each month.
This class is offered as an alternative to the four-week series to accommodate busy schedules. The concentrated weekend course covers the same principles taught in the four-week course.

Baby Care Class

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Baby Care class provides guidance and support as new parents approach their "on the job training" experience. This is an A to Z class on diapering, bathing, safety topics, signs of illness, etc. Grandparents are also welcome to register for this class.

Breastfeeding Class

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Have you decided to breastfeed? Or maybe you aren't sure yet? Attend this class taught by a lactation educator and learn tips that can help make breastfeeding rewarding and successful.

Infant Safety

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Learn the basics of infant safety from a Mother-Baby nurse. This class offers hands-on training in infant CPR and choking rescue, but it is not a certification class. Other topics discussed include SIDS, car seat safety, Shaken Baby Syndrome and tips on baby-proofing your home.

Nutrition: Baby and Beyond!

Cost: $20/mom and support person
This class will teach you how to make your own baby food, introduce solids, self-feeding, and advancing your child’s diet.  You will also learn about whole food for the whole family and family meals, how to reduce mealtime conflicts, make food adventurous, and introduce a variety of food.  Creating healthy habits as a family is also included, as well as how to navigate food labels and terms and to eat healthy on a budget.

Bootcamp for Dads

Cost: Free/Dad’s only

During Boot Camp, we will discuss basic baby care, supporting your partner and newborn emotionally and physically, managing stress and other practical needs.  Boot Camp for Dads is about equipping you to be the best father possible by meeting, talking with and learning from men that have already been there.  It is about leading your family with wisdom and vision. 

Before Baby Moms Club

Cost: Free/mom and support person
Moms Club is not a class, but you will have fun learning about babies and pregnancy from a trained facilitator, guest speakers, and other moms.  Along with a free dinner, you will receive a free gift for your baby every time you attend.  You may bring one adult support person with you – dads are encouraged to come!

Infant Massage Class

Cost: $20 for infant and parents
Come join Tina for this soothing and relaxing class. Research shows that infant massage facilitates and enhances parent-infant bonding and also reduces crying in babies. The class is designed for infants eight weeks to one year of age.  Register for two or more of the Childbirth Classes and request a code to take this class for free!

I'm Going to be a Big Brother/Big Sister (Sibling Class)

Cost:$15 for first child and $5 for each additional sibling
Big brothers and big sisters are invited to join the fun and excitement while celebrating the upcoming birth of the new baby. The class is designed for children age 3 to 6. Each child makes a craft and receives a certificate of completion. Snacks are provided. One parent must accompany the child, and grandparents are welcome! Please bring a picture of your child for the craft project.

Safe Sitter (For Girls and Boys)

Cost: $60/student
Safe Sitter is a nationally certified class for 11 to 14 year olds. A medically accurate program, Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls safe and nurturing child- care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies.

Students MUST have reached age 11 by the date of the class to attend! Class size is limited and on a first come-first serve basis.. Each student receives a Safe Sitter messenger bag with Safe Sitter products and a take home manual. For additional program information, click here for the national web site. (

Grandparent’s Class

Cost: $20/couple
Whether you will be regularly caring for your new grandbaby, or just want to provide support to the new mother, Grandparent’s Class will cover newborn care.  This class designed specifically to help prepare grandparents who will help in caring for their new grandchild. The course will cover baby care, safety, and hands-on CPR and choking training.

Heartsaver CPR, AED and First Aid

Cost: $65 per person
This one day course covers first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR. Participants receive a two-year American Heart Association certification. This is a great class for teachers, childcare providers, church nursery workers, or anyone who needs the certification for their job!
