Pediatric Surgery Tours

Having surgery can be a scary and stressful experience for children, as well as their parents if they do not know what to expect. To familiarize you and your child with the experiences that will be encountered during surgery, and to ease anxiety, Centra offers children’s pre-operative tours at both Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Scheduling a tour

To schedule a tour, please call the hospital units.

Centra Lynchburg General Hospital Surgicare: 434.200.3023

Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital Surgery Center: 434.200.4147

What will you see?

A nurse will greet you and your child and talk with you about the surgical experience.  Activities will allow you the opportunity to visit the Surgery Center or Surgicare Unit, the pre-operative area and possibly the recovery room.

Your child will be shown the special clothing, masks and caps worn by the operating room staff. Hands-on activities will also provide the opportunity to handle some of the equipment used during surgery.  There will also be plenty of time for all questions to be answered that you and your child may have about the surgical experience.

The tour allows children and their family the opportunity to interact with staff and visit surgical areas prior to surgery. Studies have shown that preparing children for surgical experiences relieves fears and reduces recovery time. In addition, having a positive surgical experience assists with coping skills for future healthcare experiences.

Who should attend?

The pre-op tour is available for children of all ages and their parents or guardians who have been scheduled for surgery. The tour is an educational, age-appropriate and fun experience.

Where to meet?

For Lynchburg General Hospital, please meet at the main entrance.

For Virginia Baptist Hospital, please meet at the Oak Lane entrance.

You then will be met by a nurse who will proceed to take you on your tour.

Tours must be scheduled in advance.
