Scholarship helps aspiring nurse

Published on Monday March 13, 2023

Thanks to the Centra Foundation’s Fray Family Scholarship Fund and Watt Foster Family Foundation Scholarship Fund, Campbell County residents don’t have to go far for a great nursing education and can focus on what really matters – learning how to provide excellent care for patients.

Centra College student Sierra Moore’s very first “patients” were her parents. The “hospital” in which she worked? The living room of her Campbell County home.

“I always dreamed of being in the healthcare field,” she said. “I used to dress up in scrubs and have my parents pretend to be my patients.”

Fast-forward a few decades and Sierra is making her dream a reality thanks in part to the Centra Foundation’s Fray Family Scholarship Fund. In addition, she is getting ready to celebrate her third anniversary as a certified nursing assistant on the oncology floor at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

She plans to remain local when she graduates with an associate degree.

“My goal as a future registered nurse is to help each individual I come across as much as I can and hopefully make a difference in their life,” she said. “On behalf of every student who has received a scholarship, thank you! It is because of you that some financial stress is lifted off our shoulders and we can focus on what we are striving to accomplish.”
