Dr. Michael J. O’Neill is a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist who joined the medical staff in 2013. He is a graduate of the University of Rochester Radiation Oncology Department where innovative physicians utilizing advanced technologies mentored him. He completed his intern year at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA in 2009. As a 2008 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, his peers elected him to the Watson Humanism Honor Society for exemplary patient care. Prior to medical school, Michael (Mick) obtained his BA in English and Anthropology from Cornell University in addition to completing his pre-medical requirements.
He is excited to bring his experience in stereotactic and image-guided radiation, particularly in the treatment of prostate, brain and lung tumors to Lynchburg. Dr. O’Neill’s research interests share a central theme: improving patient safety during treatment and quality of life after treatment. Most notably, he has studied Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for advanced stage lung cancer, examined post-treatment quality of life for head and neck cancer patients, and created metrics and simulations to train treatment teams to improve processes for better patient care. He assumes leadership roles on the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Subcommittee for Patient Safety and Quality Assurance and as a physician liaison to the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Safety Committee.
Dr. O’Neill is compassionate, communicative and thorough. He is accepting all adult general radiation oncology patients and their families. He also serves as the Centra Oncology Service Line Physician Leader.
