The Center for Childbirth and Family Education at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital offers a variety of classes to meet your childbirth and family needs. Our instructors are certified and class size is small to ensure a good experience. Most classes are held in the Center for Childbirth and Family Education at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Preparing for Childbirth Class, Three Week Series

Cost: $60/mom and support person
This interactive class provides labor and delivery preparation for the pregnant woman and her support person. Together you will gain knowledge of the birth process and be able to make personal decisions related to your birth experience.

Preparing for Childbirth, Weekend Class

Cost: $60/mom and support person
This class is offered as an alternative to the three-week series to accommodate busy schedules. The concentrated weekend course covers the same principles taught in the three-week course.

Baby Care Class

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Baby Care class provides guidance and support as new parents approach their "on the job training" experience. This is an A to Z class on diapering, bathing, safety topics, signs of illness, etc. Grandparents are also welcome to register for this class.

Breastfeeding Class

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Have you decided to breastfeed? Or maybe you aren't sure yet? Attend this class taught by a lactation educator and learn tips that can help make breastfeeding rewarding and successful.

Infant Safety

Cost: $20/mom and support person
Learn the basics of infant safety. This class offers hands-on training in infant CPR and choking rescue, but it is not a certification class. Other topics discussed include SIDS, car seat safety, Shaken Baby Syndrome and tips on baby-proofing your home.

Nutrition: Baby and Beyond!

Cost: $20/mom and support person
This class will teach you how to make your own baby food, introduce solids, self-feeding, and advancing your child’s diet.  You will also learn about whole food for the whole family and family meals, how to reduce mealtime conflicts, make food adventurous, and introduce a variety of food.  Creating healthy habits as a family is also included, as well as how to navigate food labels and terms and to eat healthy on a budget.

Infant Massage Class

Cost: $20 for infant and parents
Come join Tina for this soothing and relaxing class. Research shows that infant massage facilitates and enhances parent-infant bonding and also reduces crying in babies. The class is designed for infants eight weeks to one year of age.  Register for two or more of the Childbirth Classes and request a code to take this class for free!

Grandparents Class

Cost: $20/couple
If you are a soon-to-be grandparent or simply need a refresher course, our grandparents class is designed specifically for you! Come learn how to help care for your new grandbaby. The course will cover baby care, safety, and hands-on CPR training.

I'm Going to be a Big Brother/Big Sister (Sibling Class)

Cost:$10 for first child and $5 for each additional sibling.
Big brothers and big sisters are invited to join the fun and excitement while celebrating the upcoming birth of the new baby. The class is designed for children age 3 to 6. Each child makes a craft and receives a certificate of completion. Snacks are provided. One parent must accompany the child, and grandparents are welcome! Please bring a picture of your child for the craft project.

Safe Sitter (For Girls and Boys)

Cost: $80/student
Safe Sitter is a nationally certified class for 6th to 8th graders. A medically accurate program, Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls safe and nurturing child- care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies.

Students MUST be a rising 6th grader or have just finished 8th grade to attend! Class size is limited and on a first come-first serve basis. Each student receives a Safe Sitter messenger bag with Safe Sitter products and a take home manual. For additional program information, click here for the national web site. (

eClass Preparing for Childbirth (Understanding Birth)

Cost: $60
Can’t come to an on-site class? We’ll bring them to you! Centra's Center for Childbirth and Family Education is happy to provide online childbirth classes that you can take conveniently from home or choose to pair with an in-person class.  Our eClass is perfect for parents who need a more flexible schedule, parents on bed rest, and/or parents who prefer online learning.

Journey to Baby Program

Journey to Baby Program


The Journey to Baby Program is a group for new or soon-to-be moms and their supporters.

This program consists of an eight week series of sessions with topics on Post-Partum Mental Health, Post-Partum Recovery, Infant Care & Feeding, Healthy Pregnancies, Safe Sleep, Support During Pregnancy and the Post-Partum Period, and a Graduation Open House.

Expecting mothers are invited to join us for 8 sessions free of charge, plus a light dinner and a gift incentive for those who come for all 8 topics. The group meets every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Childbirth Education Center in Virginia Baptist Hospital. 




Centra also hosts a CenteringPregnancy program at Centra Medical Group Women’s Center.

CenteringPregnancy is not a class, but is a voluntary program, offering a group pre-natal care model mixing education classes with monthly exams at Centra Medical Group Women’s Center. CenteringPregnancy replaces one-on-one provider visits with group visits, allowing expectant mothers to discuss nutrition, breastfeeding and exercise with a certified nurse-midwife. Centra has been an official CenteringPregnancy site since 2014 offering expectant mothers a with the support needed to improve health outcomes.
