Centra Implements Ai Technology for Advanced Stroke Care

Published on Thursday July 6, 2023

Centra recently adopted an innovative Ai-based technology that empowers Centra to enhance the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of stroke identification and treatment.

As a Certified Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC), Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) recognizes the critical importance of time in stroke care. Centra's adoption of Viz.ai enables the prompt identification of large vessel occlusion (LVO) strokes, facilitating timely interventions that can prevent long-term side effects, disabilities and even fatalities.

Every minute is invaluable when it comes to stroke treatment, as the loss of over 1.5 million brain cells can occur with each passing minute of untreated stroke. With Viz.ai, Centra's on-call team receives automated alerts within minutes, ensuring the rapid detection of suspected LVO strokes. This revolutionary feature significantly reduces the time from patient arrival to intervention, enabling stroke patients affected by LVOs to receive life-saving treatment promptly.

Viz.ai's software also cross-references computed tomography (CT) images of a patient's brain with an extensive database of scans, allowing early signs of LVO strokes to be promptly identified. Care team members are instantly notified and can view the images on their mobile devices which helps to eliminate time typically required to prepare a patient for surgery.

According to Mandi Zemaiduk, Centra’s Stroke Program Director, “Viz.ai takes stroke care to the next level. Utilization of this technology by our teams at Centra has only served to positively advance how we treat patients. While AI has recently become a buzzword, I firmly believe it has the potential to become synonymous with optimal healthcare.”

Ultimately, Centra will continue to prioritize its strategic theme of Performance Excellence through the continual optimization of its care models and Viz.ai’s implementation is one more example of how this prioritization is occurring across the system.
