Centra Pharmacy Residency Program

RP

Our approach to education

Centra Health is proud to offer a pharmacy residency program that offers its residents a wide array of community hospital pharmacy experiences in a nonprofit regional integrated healthcare network. Comprised of five hospitals; Lynchburg General, Virginia Baptist, Centra Specialty Hospital, Bedford Memorial and Southside Community, Centra is nationally recognized for providing outstanding patient care and has received numerous awards.

The residency program will employ two PGY1 residents each year. The program is supported by 12 faculty members who have extensive experience caring for a wide variety of patients including neonates, the critically ill and the elderly.

    Program goals

Our goals are to teach the skills necessary for a hospital pharmacist to provide:

    • Patient-centered care
    • Respect and compassion
    • High quality, measurable outcomes
    • Continuous learning and improvement
    • Community health
    • Financial stewardship

“As a new pharmacist I wanted to have every advantage possible in today’s competitive job market. I came to Centra for my residency because it offered all the tools I needed to succeed. I was able to have pharmacist mentors as a new graduate. I took advantage of the opportunity to lecture at multiple professional programs in the area and earn a teaching certificate. I was taught the importance of giving back to the community by volunteering at the local free clinic and giving back to the pharmacy profession by precepting a student.  I stayed at Centra after my residency because of my experience and relationships made. It was clear to see that the pharmacist here wanted me to succeed in meeting my goals and would continue to help me along the way.”

"Centra’s residency program not only taught me clinical skills but also gave me the confidence to practice independently. The pharmacy team has a great relationship with physicians, nurses, and other disciplines.  I was excited to stay and enjoy still working at Centra because I am able to influence and improve patient care every day."
