Central Virginia Center for Simulation & Virtual Learning

The Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning (VLC) is a regional simulation center with a focus on multi-disciplinary healthcare training and education.
Sim Learning Center

About the VLC

The VLC offers training for all levels of healthcare providers including:

  • Centra Caregivers
  • Centra College of Nursing Students
  • Area EMS Agencies
  • University of Lynchburg Nursing and Doctorate of Physical Therapy Students
  • Central Virginia Community College Students

Mission Statement

To ensure high quality and safe care for Central Virginia by providing a regional simulation resource for health care professionals and students that incorporates multidisciplinary teams across the patient care spectrum, from pre-hospital to long term care.

Vision Statement

The Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning will be a multidisciplinary simulation resource for existing and future health care providers that will directly impact patient care and evidenced based practice and contribute toward growing simulation research.

Our space

The VLC has over 15,000 square feet of simulated environments for learners including flexible patient care rooms, intensive care unit, labor and delivery suite, apartment, nurses station and a pre-hospital provider area with a full size helicopter and ambulance.

Each room is designed to mimic a clinical environment with the same supplies, technology and equipment throughout the hospital system. Each space can also be used with A/V technology to capture learners on video for feedback and debriefing. Our program uses highly realistic manikins that bleed, cry, breathe, and can be resuscitated as well as Standardized Patients,  who are actors who portray patients and/or family members in a simulated scenario.

Consortium information

The Central Virginia Health Sciences Education Consortium governs the overall management and services of the VLC. The consortium is comprised of members of a board from 3 establishing partners; Centra, University of Lynchburg, and Central Virginia Community College. In addition to the voting members of the Consortium, the Administrative Director attends all meetings. The Consortium manages and votes on the business affairs of the VLC including the operation, budget, and employment.

Student feedback survey

Once students complete their simulation, we ask that they complete a brief survey on their simulation experience.

Faculty training

In order to use the Virtual Learning Center’s facilities and equipment for simulation education programs, each activity must provide their own Simulation Faculty to facilitate debriefings and operate simulation manikins.

We have customized, interactive, educational programs to develop Simulation Faculty for a variety of healthcare professionals. The VLC staff also partners with clinicians to develop and provide simulation programs to a variety of healthcare professionals.

Simulation faculty training includes the following topics:

Facilitator training – 3 hours

  • Introduction to Simulation Technology and Pedagogy
  • Debriefing
  • Policies and Procedures
  • Development and implementation of simulation education programs
  • Evaluation techniques

Simulation operations training – 8 hours

  • Specific Manikin Operations
  • Moulage Tips
