About our application requirements

Only electronic applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) are accepted for our Family Medicine Residency positions. We do not accept any applications that are submitted outside of ERAS. Your application will be carefully reviewed. If your application satisfactorily exceeds the requirements outlined below, invitations for a personal interview are shared via ERAS. 

Please note that contact with Residency Coordinator strictly to confirm receipt of application criteria is acceptable, but other inquiries or solicitation for interview invitation are discouraged.

Required documentation for application

Minimum criteria for an interview with Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency for July 1st PGY1 entry. These requirements must be completed prior to December 31st of year prior to PGY1 entry (except where noted).

Board scores (USMLE or COMLEX-USA)

USMLE
Step 1 passing score, on first attempt preferred
Step 2 CK passing score, on first attempt preferred

COMLEX-USA
Level 1 passing score, on first attempt preferred
Level 2 passing score, on first attempt preferred

Medical education

Preferred applicants will demonstrate graduation or pending graduation from a LCME or COCA accredited medical school or valid ECFMG Certificate (whichever is applicable) recognized by all 50 states and U.S. Territories, with either:

  • Graduation expected within 1 year prior to July 1st PGY1 entry
  • Graduation within 2 years of July 1st PGY1 entry, with: 
    • Valid ECFMG certificate (if applicable), and
    • Step 3/ Level 3 Passage, OR
    • Other residency training in the U.S. within the last year with continued practice of pertinent clinical skills

Documents

  • Three Letters of Recommendation written within the last 6 months by clinicians clearly explains level of clinical supervision of the applicant within the last 6-12 months
  • "Dean's Letter"/MSPE from the Applicant's Medical School
  • Complete Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Statement dated within 6 months

Additional requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • No Adverse NRMP or Board Actions (pending or confirmed)
  • No unaccounted for delays in medical school training and employment
  • For the 2023-24 interview season, we will offer in-person interviews with virtual interviews available. Applicants must attend an interview demonstrating excellence in:
    • Verbal communication skills
    • Emotional intelligence
    • Teamwork, listening, dealing with ambiguity and leadership
    • Commitment to and understanding of the scope of Family Medicine
    • Passion for longstanding therapeutic patient relationships

Further criteria for entry into PGY1

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) updated within two years of PGY1 entry. Return of all Needs Assessment and Background Check information sent after Matching with program. No exclusionary Background Check information identified.
