Our approach to education

Centra’s Health system encompassing a network of hospitals, primary care practices and multiple specialties provides ample opportunities for residents to gain hands-on clinical experience in an academic setting.

The majority of the PGY-1 year is spent caring for patients in the hospital setting. Adult medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, maternity care and surgery are hospital-based experiences. The Family Medicine Service allows the first-year resident to participate in the inpatient management of Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency patients.

Rotation Length
Acute Care (AC) 2 weeks

Although some of the rotations are similar to the first year of training, the responsibilities of the resident are more as a supervisor and teacher. In addition to the required hospital-based rotations, most rotations emphasize the outpatient management of common office problems.
